Thank you for all the good advice/suggestions. Jay - I have used tru-oil before and, similar to U-40, I don't think it's hardy enough to prevent my rod handle from rubbing off. I thought a light coat of epoxy will do a much better job of preventing this rub off. Michael - I agree that I can draw and paint then epoxy on carbon handles....however I can't do jig checkered patterns and carve/et

I am in the process of designing a handle for a St Croix SCV 9'6" 4-8lb line rating blank that I will use as a bank drifting rod for winter steelhead in the Pacific Northwest. The guides will be 14 Fuji Titanium SiC microguides tapering down from stripper size 10 to size 3.5 ring sizes. The reelseat will be a Fuji dual trigger reelseat. I have built several rods with these guides and reelsea

Wow! You guys are rock! This is the info that I needed! Thank you Roger and Jerry for the acrylic acetate blocks! Jay I don't have dogs but I have a couple of kids who might be able to help me chew the bones. Lol. Joking aside I thank you for the info on antlers and animal bones. Gonna give this a try sometimes. In the meantime I will practice with these acrylic blocks first..... Thi

Below is a link to a beautiful handled turned by Eden Bromfield. I love the white accent he used for his handle. In his post he said that the white is 'white mammoth tusk'. I tried googling elephant tusk and it's quite expensive. Is there an alternative that I can use as a white accent for my rod handles? Thanks.

I have been looking into building a natural cork handle with a fish engraving and ran across a few very nice examples while doing my search online. I have built a couple of rod handles with engravings in the past. I would use an x acto knife to carve the image in the natural cork handle then glue thin slices of burnt burl corks and fine lathe the handles down. While doing my search online

Thank you for the info. I will leave the two blanks as they are because the Sage blank is beautiful and I would hate to mess around with it and have it fail on me after countless hours putting it together.

I am in the process of putting together a Sage SP196 9'6" blank and a St Croix SCV 4-8lb 9'6" blank. I would like to build both of these blanks identical to test their sensitivity. I notice that the St Croix male/female ferrule insertion depth is shorter than the male/female ferrule insertion depth of the Sage SP196. I don't have exact measurements since I am at work but the St C

Thank you for all the responses to my post. I find them all extremely helpful. After taking all of the above responses into account I have decided to just wrap the double-foot guide starting at the edge of the ferrule. I have wrapped several rods like this and to date have not hay any ferrules split/break on me. As far as choosing a color that matches blank color, I too have had a hard ti

I am in the process of putting together a 2-piece Sage SP196 9'6" 4-10lb line weight blank as a drift rod for steelhead here in the Pacific Northwest. My question is: How important is it to wrap the entire length of the ferrule with thread? Or can I just wrap part of the ferrule and be confident in knowing that the ferrule will not break on me? The bottom section of the blank goes

Thanks Bill for the quick response! I will try that this evening and see how long it will last before solidifying. Do you store the bottle right sight up or up side down? Does storing the bottle upside down in the fridge help you think?

I have a few blanks that I have sanded down and would like to finish with CPXtra urethane rod finish. These are mainly small blanks used for drift fishing so I usually don't use a lot of CPXtra to coat them. In the past I opened up a bottle of CPXtra, used about 1/10th of the bottle and, per recommendations, closed the cap on the bottle and stored it upside down (lid on the bottom). However, o

Thank you all for the responses. After reading them I feel that I have a firmer grasp on how to make a birch bark handle......first thing on my to-do list is a day hike to find some fallen birch and/or Douglas fir trees so I can collect some bark. Woodworking is new to me so this will be a challenging and fun project! I can envision how my Sage and North Fork Composites custom rods will look w

I would like to make a birch bark handle for a Sage drift rod I plan to put together. I would like to keep the final rod weight down. I tried to look for weight comparison btwn birch bark handles and cork handles. How heavy are birch bark handles compared to cork handles? I have not had a chance to personally hold a birch bark handle rod so any feedback is greatly appreciated before I invest

I have an avid steelhead drift fisherman who is a good friend who would like me to wrap him a Sage CT casting drift rod. He would like to have his favorite corkie/yarn hook be embedded in some sort of a clear/transparent resin and placed in the butt cap section of the rod. I tried Googling online but didn't receive many hits. I was wondering if any of you know how to do this and if so, then pl

I have ordered through Decal Connections before. They have excellent service and I have nothing but positive things to say about them. I just thought I would speed up the turnaround time by printing them at home. Thank you all for the suggestions!

I would like to start printing my own decal using my inkjet printer. I am struggling with trying to find which decal paper to use and where to order it online. Do any of you have any recommendations? There is a sponsor on this forum that has a Decal Media Kit but for some reason it won't let me complete the order online and I have left them a couple of messages at least a week ago and have not

Thank you so much guys! I love the CP4CT titanium-coated guides! Will order them for the two Lamiglas blanks. Will see if I can make the 8(10) tip top fit the size 11 tip of the GSB 132-2M blank. Thanks again!

It doesn't matter which guides since I know I can't be selective because not many companies, if any, make guides with ring size 8 and tip sizes 10 and 11. These are mainly for the Columbia River application so they won't be exposed to salt water. My friend would much prefer titanium rings and frame (yes, I know, they are way overkill for a plunking rod....but that's what he wants) but he unders
