Jan, Stellar looking grips. Where do you get the cord that you use? I am not familiar with them. Thanks, Joe.

Thanks Sean, My only hesitation with theTuffButt was the nylon gimbal (I prefer aluminum there) but it looks like the gimbal is a separate component so I may try to just put an aluminum one in its place. Thanks, Joe.

Thanks Tom. I will have a look at Riley Rods. If anyone has an aluminum but suggestion I'd like to hear that also. Joe.

I have built two offshore rods (one spiral wrapped standup and one spiral wrapped tuna jigging stick) both rods with a "blank through" butt construction using a slick butt or tuff butt type nylon sleeve for the rear grip to facilitate removal from a boat rod holder. I am looking to build two 30lb class and two 50lb class standup tuna rods on Calstar blanks. I wanted to build using a

It would really change the characteristics of the rod but I could remove the first guide, cut the blank down and glue on a new ttop where the existing first guide is. OTOH, I could build a much nicer rod on a better qual

Folks; I wanted to get the collective opinion of this board on something that I experienced recently. I have a "semi-custom" graphite rod from a somewhat well-known manufacturer that I purchased a few of years ago before the rod-building bug bit me. It is a baitcaster rated at 15-25lbs outfitted with an Avet SX reel and 25lb test braid. The rod has been used sparingly due to my inve

I guess the whole problem comes down to how much time you want to spend wrapping. I certainly could coax every single wrap of a guide-wrap in place carefully and gently but when wrapping a 7' rod with a 1" diameter blank at the stripper gu

I have either double-wrapped or wrapped over underwrap on a number of heavier saltwater poles and I always seem to have the same problem; aligning the threads and burnishing is difficult/impossible when wrapping on top of another layer of thread. To date I have always used size A thread for both the under and overwrap. I have tried wrapping on top of unfinished underwraps as well as color pres

I need to get 3 CL26-MS (Silver, 1.05" ID, Channel Lock) reel seats from Pac Bay. Along with that I need 3 Silver Gimbal AG27-S (Alum Gimbal 1.07" ID) or other similar gimbal to accomodate 1.08" blank. I have searched high/low for those items and they seem to be on backorder and will take a few weeks to receive. Anyone know where I could find them in stock? Thanks, Joe.

I am spiral wrapping which was a consideration for the Pac Bay "B" series and USGs. I used the USGs in a spiral wrapped 50lb stand-up rod that I built and thought they worked out well in that application but with the whippier jigging blank the cracked epoxy is a valid concern....Thanks for pointing that out. BTW, how does the sprial wrap change guide suggestions;) Joe.

I am building a Tuna Jigging rod for a traditional NE jigging application. As a basis I am starting with a Seeker CJBF70 (recommended to me by Seeker rep - 7', 30-50lb, fast action Jig/Bait blank). Just curious what guides people would recommend for this configuration. Some of the guides I was considering are: * Pac Bay Model B (http://www.fishpacbay.com/prod_gtsaltwater.html) * Fuji "

Billy, I was out at the "other canyon" (Block Canyon / Fishtails off of Montauk). I went out on a Viking trip. Last year a stood next to a Jig-master named Pete (can't recall his last name) who was nailing the fish standing right next to me using basically all of the same equipment as I was (shiny diamond jig). I know it is more technique than it is equipment. This past weekend I

I think that Ray raises a good point...when I cranked that tension down during the wrap I got the wraps to lay much better. Although more time consuming it has to be easier to finish each layer before proceding on to the next.

By means of follow-up on this thread I rolled the dice last night on my "patriot" Tuna Stick. The underwraps are fairly long white NCP. On either side they have Scarlet nylon trim bands. That was color preserved and epoxied. On top I put the guides and double wrapped with 050 Cobalt blue. Finally I finished the whole thing with FlexCoat high-build epoxy. I was a little concerned t

Guys, I have Navy Nylon on top of and White Underwrap. The underwrap is finished. I was thinking of finishing the Navy Guidewrap without using color preserver to preserve some of the translucence of the nylon. What do you think the results of not using CP on the Navy guidewrap will be? Thanks, Joe.

I have been building a Stand-up tuna stick and the material layers as you progress away from the bare blank are as follows: Blank Underwrap/Trim bands Color Preserver 1 Coat Finish Epoxy Guide Foot 1st Guide Wrap 2nd Guide Wrap Color Preserver Final Finish The reason that I sealed and finished the underwrap is that in the past wrapping on top of the underwrap I find difficult as the

I mixed up a 15cc batch of FlexCoat Rod builders epoxy in a 30mm mixing cup. I am sure that I accurately measured 7.5cc of both parts... I mixed it and then coated a bushing with it (bushing was already on blank). I positioned my slick butt on top of the bushing and then began work on my real seat (elapsed time 5 minutes)... When I picked-up the mixing cup it was *HOT* to the touch and nea

Guys, I am familiar with the whole static guide alignment process on a medium or even heavy casting, splinning or plugging blank but I am building my first Tuna blank..... How could I temporarily place the guides on the blank and hank down on it with like 20lbs of force and expect all the guides to not just pop right off? I am building a spiral wrap but nonetheless I would think the mask
