I was checking out Shimano's Butterfly Jigging System. Do other manufaturer's build similar blanks? Any recommendations on how to build a butterfly jigging rod?

I would think that a butterfly would be easier to catch with an net rather than a rod. Let's leave the butterflies alone and stick to building fishing rods.

What size hooks do you use for butterflys ??

Just look for the same specks of that blank. I am sure you can find many the same.

Sorry guys, I guess I am on the bleeding edge but apparently in Japan they are killing the tuna using this technique and Shimano is bringing a whole system to the state (rod, reels and jigs).

It kind of looks like diamond jigging but the jigs are much more "realistic".

I think you need a blank with enough backbone to land a tuna but enough tip sensitivity to bounce a jig.

Joe - I believe there are pictures of these rods on the AllCoast site. There is also a discussion about them on Noreast.com Offshore forum. I believe these are teh blanks which when a fish is on, the ENTIRE tiop section of teh rod limps, and you fight the fish with only teh bottom 1/4 of teh rod.

I cannot search .com sites at work, but if anyone has the links to the photo's of the rod I am referring to, and the rod I believe Joe is referring to, please post it. It really looks like a terrible rod, but apparantly they are catching on and people who have used them like them, a lot.

granted the action of the rod helps to present the bait, But it is the right bait that the fish are eating that they go after.

I had the same impression that you have but Shimano is touting their "system" (read as "buy everything from us") while other manufacturers are making nearly the same lures but not selling a "system". I went tuna fishing to the canyons last week and spoke to some people who were familiar with Butterfly jigging. Their opinion was that the jigs themselves were unique and effective....the rod was a nice addition but not critical....the reel was not at all crucial.

My goal was to build a similar rod, pair it with a smaller Avet and give butterfly jigging a try.

I would check out the prices of the lures and the action and see if any one else makes lures like them. Unless they are a good price ?

Blank I was starting to think of moderate action maybe E Glass ? We are talking tuna in deep water.
Have not done this so I am guessing.

Joe who were you fishign with out there? I was out there (Hudson) on Tues-Wed with a jig fanatic (Kil Song) and he was using a hammered diamond to hook up and land 2 BFT 80 & 100#'s, and broke another one off on the next cast. Hammered diamonds work good enough more than enough of the time. I rally think this is one of those things where the grass is greener...although the grass is bright green on this side already, so why bother?

He was using a Saltiga 50 & an 8' Japanese Graphite blank, and really got the fish in quickly. Tehre is an excellent thread on selecting a jigging rod on noreast.com Rod building forum, which someone might wanna link here as I'm still stuck at work.

I was out at the "other canyon" (Block Canyon / Fishtails off of Montauk). I went out on a Viking trip. Last year a stood next to a Jig-master named Pete (can't recall his last name) who was nailing the fish standing right next to me using basically all of the same equipment as I was (shiny diamond jig). I know it is more technique than it is equipment.

This past weekend I was jigging a hammered diamond jig to no avail but the bite was very slow so I was not surprised. Only hookups on the two days and one night we were out there were on live squid at night. I picked up a ~40lb YFT.

I was livelining one rod and jigging another in any attempt to hook-up. I have been reading about butterfly jigging and there is a Northeast Angling episode about it on tap for this season so I became interested. Chatted on the boat with some of the guys and they know of the whole butterfly jig thing but it is pretty new here so very little first-hand experience.

I wouldn't morgage the house but you wind-up spending so much on a tuna trip what is another $150 for a butterfly rod :)

HEre's a link to th epost on Noreast on these rods. I just heard the price of a single jiog is $25. HAve fun, I'm happy using Gold plated Hammered diamonds for $5, lol. Actually I don't even jig or Tuna fish, only on teh internet. lol.
