Do this first - watch Tom Kirkman's "Applying Epoxy Finish" on youtube. Then, before you do any work on a rod wash your hands with soap and water and rinse real good. When it is time to apply finish be sure and pour the finish on aluminum foil or in an aluminum foil pan. Most all the bubbles will disappear. After the finish is applied per the youtube video low heat from a heat gun w

Go to YouTube and look up "Applying Epoxy Finish". It's a great watch and I believe it is one of Tom Kirkmans.

Thank you all. You have given me a whole bunch of good information. The rod is a build for a brother-in-law headed to Canada for walleye in another week or so. I'll let him make the decision after he uses it. Thanks again guys

I rushed a build and am now faced with a dilemma. The foregrip needed a little more shaping than it got. The rod is completely finished with a 9 guide concept system. I have 4 wheel type rod supports and am tempted to put it back on the lathe. Am I nuts for even thinking about this?

I wouldn't do it. You can make really good rod racks from pvc pipe and hang them overhead in the garage if you have one. It's cost effective but a little time consuming.

One of my first builds from 25 years ago has the outer finish coming off. I bought it from Clemens but have no idea who made it. I'm thinking of pulling the guides off and doing a rebuild. Any suggestions on how to remove remaining finish and what if anything I should put back on it. The same guides will go back on the same exact places as this little 6 footer casts a country mile. I just do

Just curious - I have 3 drills that I can use to turn cork and birch handles. 1400, 2000, and 2800 RPM. I have used the 1400 and 2000 but not the 2800. Just looking for some opinions as to which is the better speed. The handles are glued on the blank when I turn them. Thanks for any and all input.

I've found that a phone call to Mudhole gives instant results. They have always been very helpful.

Most items that I have seen with the Cabela's name on them have a little tag that says made in China.

Thanks for the help guys. I have an equal amount of rings made from live trees and down and dead trees so I think I'll make one out of green and one out of the dry and see what happens. After the green rings are turned into a grip and have some time to cure I'll report back. Thanks again

I made about 1000 birch bark rings for handles from live trees. My question is how long do you have to let them dry before gluing them up? I also made about 1000 rings from down and dead trees and they are not as easy to work with as the green rings. (Tree huggers don't despair, the land is being cleared)

I don't get it. Doesn't sound like the Mud Hole I've done business with, especially not checking the blanks upon request by the customer before sending them out.

Does anyone have any idea where 24 hr epoxy can be found? I've used it in the past for cork grips but can't find it any more. What would be a good substitute?

Same here. I ordered a tip top that didn't fit the blank that was in the order. It was my fault too, I stuck my head where the sun don't shine and ordered the wrong size. One phone call and the right top was in the mail and I got to keep the wrong size top. I even offered to return it but was told it wasn't necessary. It wasn't a cheap one either. They know how to keep people coming back. T

I just had an IS701L in pink delivered today. My wiff has been wanting a pink blank for some time now. Glad to hear the good reports on these blanks. Putting on a holographic seat and guides and yet to be determined thread colors.

22. Question for Tom
All of a sudden the "new" that was shown on the new posts and comments is gone. It has come and gone in the past also. Is that a feature that I inadvertently turn on and off or something else. Handy little thing to have but not a big deal, just curious. Thanks

23. Blank Coloring
I am getting ready to color a blank. Haven't done it before. The question I have is how does Krylon Fusion compare in durability to the 2 part automotive finishes? What kind of rod prep is needed? Thanks.

For the most accurate 50 - 50 mix I use a reloaders digital scale. Perfect results every time. I have yet to have a problem like Jesse is having.

What would be a good clear coat? Does Krylon make one?

Hi Dave,
If you have Excel I can send you a taper offset spreadsheet that will do your calculations. Works great.

One has to wonder if the products will be of the same quality. It's the people that make the difference, not the name. Who knows - new people, new ideas, new products - it could be great.
I wish them well.
