Mark, The only problem with any quick drying, curing or thick/non-thinable finish is that you can't spray it. And even if you can get it done clean-up may be difficult to not impossible, ruining tips or whole guns. Spraying is needed for non-continuous surfaces that a wipe-on or brush-on doesn't work for.

I use a lot of woods that fade with exposure to UV. Purple heart, bloodwood, pink ivory and others. You can use Marine Spar with the highest UV protectors that you can find and make sure the owner knows to keep the rod in a rod bag when not in use. This will extend the color by years.

Mike, I've done leather grips before and have two for beach shark. I've had no bleeding problems and should have a bit of cutoff that you could use for testing if you like. Scott

I'm thinking I don't have to hit the flee market for repair materials any more. The new grip article is great and just the suppliers list has me in a dangerous place as far as free time in the near future.

Wow I've been doing boards for 8 or 10 years and I had my email blocked... Sorry guys, it's unblocked now. Rob just click on my name and you can get one of my email addresses. Danny, Do I know you or have we met? It sure looks like we run a groove in the same water.

Ron, I can turn you anything you can think of if you like. You will be hard pressed to find centerpin style stuff preformed but with a bit of modification you can make preformed stuff work fine. For me 10" and 8" or 10" and 6" work great and let me plant the butt in my chest to take pressure off of my hand and arm with the longer rods. When I pin for local trout on smal

The PA mile streams only need something in the 11' or so range and you can even get away with something smaller. Go north into NY and a 13' to 15' work well as they will on Elk if you go south. A Rainshadow will be a great selection for a first rod, you'll build more. If you will only use this rod on the PA mile streams you won't be fishing them once icing becomes a real problem because they w

Has anyone ever heard of something like a Flex Ice Guide. I have someone asking for these guides. He said that when his buddy shakes his rod that the guides "come apart" and the ice comes off? That's the description and it has me pretty stumped. Any help that could offered would be appreciated. Thanks Scott

Ebony gets me pretty bad. Even with a mask on my eyes water. This year I'm going to have to make dust control and air flitration the priority.

Turn your insert on your 10 mm mandrel. Slip your turned insert on your next smallest mandrel it will spin freely. Mount your mandrel in you your lathe then with 1 piece of masking tape wind some 220grit sandpaper using the rotational direction of your lathe to tighten the sand paper to the mandrel. It will flap around as the mandrel spins with the insert flopping around the mandrel loosely.

You can also purchase different densities of balsa from soft to hard. There is no need to cut it into rings unless that is the look you are trying going for. I buy balsa in 3"x4"x48" boards for turning floats. Give nationalbalsa.com a look, if you order give them a call and ask for hard balsa.

Andy, You don't have to worry about your wife learning to box because you're already living dangerously. As my wife told me years ago, "You have to sleep sometime". I tried sleeping with one eye open then I tried sleeping with the right open for a few hours then the left. After extensive testing I determined that she was indeed correct, I did have to sleep eventually and I had to

Use a penetrating oil from A&A Auto or other like store. Give it some time and spray on some more. Then give it a good wack. This works for stuck dirtbike axels. I can usually break a taper with just heat though.

When I did the pricing exercise my thought was that the requested rods were to have preformed grips and something close to Hardloys on them with plain wraps and no decoration. To me that’s pretty much a factory replica. I told Tom that it was most likely that I would not have accepted a request to build a rod like that. Keep in mind that I don’t do this to pay the mortgage so I prefer to b

This link should get you started. ' As far as the finish goes, give it a test on a scrap piece blank and see what happens is what I would do.

I’ve used TBII for years for grips with and without wood. I have yet to have one returned with a glue failure. I tried to use TBIII for some steam bent nets this past winter and had some problems. I’m sure that I had temps below the recommended working temp as my shop isn’t heated when I’m not there, I’m cheap. TBII is very forgiving at the lower end of it’s working temp range. I

Brian, Just look in you local area and you will find some saw mills. A friend of mine owns a sawmill and I can pick through his scraps at my leisure. You should be able to find a sawmill in your area and work out a deal that will let you dig around for turning stock. You may find that the wood needs to be dried but then you will get to play around with something else as drying is half scien

Saying you are going to do something and actually doing it are two different things. Killing all of the bass in Japan just doesn't sound like a realistic goal to me. We have been trying to get the Lamprey eels out of the Great Lakes system for years. I can't see any way to totally rid a system of a single fish species without killing an entire lake population and then rebuilding it. That ce

I did my first turnings with a homemade drill lathe. Just a drill held in my father’s bench vise, a homemade drive spur from a screwdriver and a nail in a board for a dead center. It wasn’t safe and it worked like carp but I did make wood chips and round stuff. Buy a lathe. You won't be sorry and like the others have said you could always sell it if you don't like turning. I'd be willi

Randy, I use the Turtle wax on the bare blanks before they are ever wrapped all the time. Those bottles are pretty old, maybe they were manufactured before the invention of silicone. :-)

I’ve been using the same bottle of liquid turtle wax and swirl remover for maybe 10 years. It’s not like it takes a lot to buff rods. :-) I also will buff the blanks to remove shipping marks from the pieces rubbing against each other. I can’t remember the last time I’ve had a problem with fisheyes. I do keep the motorcycle lubricants in another part of the house as a precaution. My

The first rod that I ever re-wrapped was done with thread from my mother's sewing room and superglue. It may not have looked great but it lasted until I went off to college where I lost track of the rod. I was about 10 at the time I did the re-wrap. Sometimes function is enough especially for a 10 year old. Now I’m 41 and way smarter??? I really hate superglue repairs. Most everyone cho

Then I would go with the ceramics. Pin is just short for centerpin or float reel. Float fishing can be as addictive as fly fishing. I’ve been fishing a pin since the late 80’s and it’s really getting to be popular in the Great Lakes. It’s very effective.

Steve, I fish NY for steel all the time. At 10 deg you'll be fighting slush and anchor ice all day unless you are really high up on a dam controlled river so you may not be bothered by the guide icing too much. :-) You will also have to deal with ice on your line at those temps. Roll casting will help or some of the spey casts will help too. You will have less icing on the snakes and it wil

If you seal the bottom section of a blank with just air inside you will make a more effective floatation solution than injecting foam. Foam filling the void weighs more than air filling the void. You will need to offset the weight of the rod and reel to get it to float. I think you will have to look at a solution that is on the outside of the blank to accomplish this.
