epoxing a taper query

Hi: I am building a six weight, and instead of using a winding check I wrapped the thread to butt up against the cork and tapered this down to the blank (think 5 wt SP for a visual). The taper continues from the narrow top of the cork to the blank, and also holds the hook keeper. It looks sharp, but after putting on one coat of LS Supreme (which is great to use, BTW- first time), I foresee a problem with the epoxy self-leveling down the wrap- which is what I don't want it to do in this case. I am hoping to be able to have the epoxy cover the taper- evenly. Any constructive comments and suggestions are welcome! Thanks! John Re: epoxing a taper query

Put the first coat on very thin, then let your finish get thick and try putting it on thick. Also after your batch has set for and hour or so you can take a needle and dip into the thick finish you can square off the edges.. I have learned when useing LS, I put on very thin coats of finish, it seems to stay level easier.. Thanks Davesrods Re: epoxing a taper query

I've built up thread at the grip to make a taper to the blank also and it does look good. If I am understanding the epoxy problem correctly, it sounds like the same difficulty I had at first. The epoxy runs from the high side (near the grip) to the low side (at the blank) while turning. If this is the case, I solved the problem by placing a book under the rod support on the dryer, raising the rod tip to get the taper itself leveled out more. Epoxy stayed where I put it then. John, Do what Lee says. I do this all the time. I jack up the end of my rod dryer until the top section of wrap is level. You still must use thin coats. You will see that you can not "level" top and bottom of rod taper at the same time. But, this helps the problem. By having one side level I guess you decrease the effect of gravity by half. If you don't go overboard on the amount you will find that LS, as with all finishes, there is a certain amount of adhesion that will occur and keep the finish on the sloped wrap. Go ahead and resign yourself to having to use two applications, if not three, to get a nice coating in this area. ............................. Re: epoxing a taper query

I just do light coats and works fine. Usually 3 is required. I use LS Supr. too. Re: epoxing a taper query
