Is Permagloss used to coat the entire rod for refinishing? Are there other products? Re: Permagloss

John I have used Permagloss to coat the entire blank for a refinish with great success. You must be sure any and all dirt, oil, fingerprints etc. are removed and maybe give the blank a VERY LIGHT sanding (200 or 300 paper) just enough to dull the existing finish but not enought remove any material fibers. Neil, I've tried it a few times with poor results. Not the Permagloss' fault. My problem is dust. It seemed that when I used the latex glove method, it must have created some static and the dust piled on. I've tried sponge applicators with better sucess. What method do you use? Do you turn the rod after application or just leave it standing? Re: Permagloss Applicator

At least two good ways to do it that I aware of. Saturate a rag/cheesecloth with the Permagloss and quickly wipe it on in one or two lengthwise strokes. Or, make your own "finisher" from a piece of PVC tubing and some butyl rubber. Cap the end of a short piece of PVC tube with the butyl (old inner tube material is fine) and then pierce a small hole in the center of the butyl. The hole should be at least as small or smaller than your blank's tip diameter. Fill the tube with some Permagloss and push the blank into the filled tube, down through the hole in the butyl and on through. This could require two people unless you have rigged up something to hold your "finisher". This gives you a sort of "squeegy" coated finish. There are some tricks to make this tool and method easier and we'll cover them in an article later. I have not experimented with material other than the butyl - it seems to work fine - but latex may be just as good. ................. Re: Permagloss Applicator

I haven't tried it yet. I am thinking of using latex gloves and maybe hanging it vertically to dry. Are there any other products that you could use? How thin is the material? Thanks...John Re: Permagloss Applicator

I saw the 2nd method mentioned by tom in rod factory I visited. The material is more like a thin latex membrane, sort of latex glove thickness. I think the easy stretch of the thin latex is more suitable. The tube/container is lying less than vertical to prevent the "paint" from flowing out through the hole then the blank/tip is put through the the tube made more vertical to allow the paint to surround the blank and then the blank is pushed up, coating it, but leaving just a bit (butt) left below to hang on to. Then the blank is pivoted almost horizontal (not spilling the paint of course) and pulled back, pulling off the excess paint. The container is on a stand about chest height and is on a pivot/ or rotates around the lateral/horizontal axis. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
