Hiya gang, I recently built me a pig sticking 7wt and while the ferrule fit seemed fine upon initial inspections,... after fishing it hard now several times, I've noticed a nasty tendency; Ferrule Twist! The rod's sections have never come apart during the cast, but after about 10 or 12 long hauls, the middle section of the rod has twisted slightly to the left by about 10-20 degrees... not sure whats causing this; my cast or my craftsmanship? The ferrule walls are extremely thin, and I wonder if perhaps I wrapped it a little too tightly, thus constricting the sleeve enough to prevent a good seating... Or maybe it was spined incorrectly and thats causing it (though I don't think thats likely for it was spined by the blank's maker and by me, and our results were the same). Dunno, any suggestions on what I did wrong, or perhaps what I can do to fix it? At anyrate, once it starts, I usually just reseat the section with as much force as I feel the ferrule can with stand and that seems to get me through another 20 or 30 casts... sure like to avoid it from happening on another rod though. Thanks for any help gang, Nate H. Re: ferrule twisting..... what did i do?

Try coating the male end with bee's wax, it seems to increase friction to hold as well as being easy to seperate. Jesse Re: ferrule twisting..... what did i do?

There is nothing you can do with rod spine that keeps a rod from trying to twist. If your rod is built with the guides on the top, then the tip section will attempt to twist when under load, regardless of how you orient the spine. Are you fitting the sections together properly? Bring them together with the guides mis-aligned at 90-degrees to each other. When the sections begin to snug, continue bringing them together but apply more pressure and twist them into alignment. This twisting motion will generally lock the ferrule into position and will prevent cast-off or twist under most circumstances. If you still get twist, you have a few options. If ferrule fit is poor you may be able to correct that through various methods previously listed here regarding loose ferrules. A search should turn up plenty of ideas. The other option is to rewrap your rod with a spiral wrap. This will prevent rod twist under all loaded conditions, perhaps with the exception of casting torque, if that is even a problem for you. ............. Re: ferrule twisting..... what did i do?

I missed the part about it being a fly rod. There is obviously a problem with ferrule fit, or the sections are not being joined properly. ....... Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
