I build many of these type rods and I am afraid there is not really much you can do here. Almost anything you put on will also peel or chip just like the factory finish on the blank. I had some guys using my rods that were really hard on the area between the butt wrap and the first guide, so I just started wrapping that area with a thread the same color as the blank. Then finished over it. When they tear that up I just rewrap and refinish and send them on their way again. If someone knows of a method by which you can keep the peeling and chipping of the blank finish to a minimum I'd sure like to hear of it. Re: rod finish

When I need a heavier than normal finish I take my blanks to a auto body shop for a top coat finish. I scuff the rod with a scotch brite pad gray in color. My auto body man uses a epoy finish that can stand lots of abuse. The same finishes used on fiberglas rods. Suggestion for the do it selfers. No finish well adhere to a rod that has not not been deglazed (scuffed) washed down with a grease and wax remover Good Luck Bob Re: rod finish
