Re-finishing telescoping rod

I'm working on re-doing an old Lew's rod, the kind where the rod "telescopes" into the handle, which is about 16 inches long. Since I can't remember from stripping the old wraps/guides off (shoulda taken notes...) is there usually a "stop wrap" put on so the rod doesn't insert far enough to reach the first guide, or is the butt cap/length of the handle sufficient? This seems to put the first guide a fair distance from the reel seat - about 23 inches, and it's a trigger grip baitcasting reel seat. I'm using AmTak black chrome/gold ring guides with black thread and metallic gold trim rings...which doesn't matter re the question, but looks pretty good. ==dave== Re: Re-finishing telescoping rod

Dave, I would put the first guide where you think it belongs when the rod is extended as if being used and then epoxy a plug into the butt of the blank so that it will not go down into the handle far enough to hit the wrapping on the first guide. It is usually easy to cutt off the butt cap and replace with a new one so that a plug can be installed. I would not use an extra wrap as a stop as this wrap will get beat up and look like heck.
