Wood ice rod grip

I would like to turn some ice rod grips and looking for wood specie recommendations. They will be painted. Light and durable.

Bass wood and white pine are among the lightest woods and should make into durable grips.

If you ask about a finish consider Boiled linseed oil, Tongue oil.or even Spar varnish, however, there are many more finishes available.

Scott,
I have made ice rod handles from diamond willow.
When finished, I simply applied two coats of flex coat epoxy finish and the grips turned out very well and have stood up to the test of time.
