Re: Spinning Rod “Choker” Guide

I use fluorocarbon line as the main line on my spinning gear, and I use the same size ring choke guide, as the ring size on the 3rd reduction guide. Which i my case makes the choke guide a 5.5 KB. I do this because a 5.5 is slightly taller, and I believe it helps with the stiffer fluorocarbon line that I use. The running guides I use are either size 5 or size 4.5 KT's

Based on the previous discussion, you could run reducing guides all of the way from the first guide to the guide just before the tip top and have no choke guides, only reducing guides.
i.e. the final choke point of the rod would be the tip top.

Best wishes.

Roger,

That wouldn't provide you with any of the benefits of the NGC.

Roger, that is the concept behind the old cone of flight (COF) guide layout. It gradually reduces the line coils by using multiple sized guides. It is not only much heavier than the more modern guide trains but also less efficient.

It all comes down to what the line choice is , it determines EVERYTHING when referring to spinning setups .

Tom and Norm,
Of course your comments are right on.

I was simply making the point that if one is concerned about a choke guide you would use a uniform guide size reduction to only have the tip top the only choke point.

Any more on a spinning rod, I generally use 3 guides to get to the first running guide and go from there.

Also, on spinning rods, I almost always use the equivalent of a match guide - guide height for the first guide to avoid line slap when casting.
