Build History- Keeping Track of Components
Posted by: Tom Harrigan (---)

I am starting another build, and realizing that keeping track of what components I've used before and my likes and dislikes will be useful.

I'm just starting with a simple excel workbook, listing components, clipping and pasting images of components I've ordered, etc.

It'll likely do it for me, but I'm thinking with this group, there are some interesting and efficient systems out there.

Anyone have a system that works well for them?

Just typing this question made me think keeping track of costs will be useful as well, so I know I'm missing other things.

Many thanks!

Tom, I follow what Jim said pretty much the same. I have a detail sheet for every build that has all components, layout, wrap details for not only the butt wrap but each guide as well. It helps to list the thread details as well. I had a customer come back after about five years and wanted a matching rod for his new wife. I pulled out his sheet and had all the information I needed.

Bought one of those dollar black and white cover subject books with graph sheets in it, many years ago, put all my stuff in it, including an illustration with measurements, has worked fine so far.

Send me an email and I'll reply with an Excel file that has worked for me for years.
