Applying Decals

Quick question. Attempting my first build, wouldn’t putting a base layer finish before applying the decal and then applying a coat over it make the appearance raised and quite noticeable? My Rev RX7 is a matte finish and what are the consequences if I apply the decal without a base layer of finish or CP? Re: Applying Decals

If you want to read the decal, you'll put down a base layer. If you don't want it to be noticeable, skip the decal. Dennis J. Danku (Sayreville,NJ) Re: Applying Decals

I have done both and applying the sticker over a base coat does give it more character. Base coat needs to be on point - well leveled and free of any defects/bubbles/fish eyes. Re: Applying Decals

Put a thin layer of epoxy down first for best results. Re: Applying Decals

I personally like the sort of "floating" appearance of a decal over a base layer of epoxy. I've done it both ways. Re: Applying Decals

A nice effect can be made by putting down a short wrap of thread in whatever color you like. Finish it and then apply the decal on that and overcoat with one more finish application. Re: Applying Decals

I've done it both ways; with or without a base coat. If the blank is glossy or smooth you can get away without a base coat. I mostly use Perma Gloss for a base coat unless the blank is painted (too hot for most painted blanks). A couple of very thin coats of Perma Gloss works very well and is extremely thin. I finish the decal (after it's dried) with a couple more coats of Perma Gloss. I found out the hard way that it's almost impossible to put a decal on a sanded blank like a NFC without a base coat of some type. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
