Hi I am looking to start building surf rods mainly for stripe bass. Is there a hand wrapper that I can convert into a power wrapper when I decide to upgrade later? If not. what is the best hand wrapper in the current market? Thanks

Pretty sure the mudhole hand wrappers can go on the mudhole tracks that the RBS power wrappers use.

I just got the RBS Pro G2 power wrapper and I’m pretty happy with it. If you have the money i would say it’s worth it

Is there a reason you chose the RBS Pro G2 power wrapper instead of the ALPS Upgraded Power Wrapper & Dryer 110v?

Francis is correct. The RBS track at Mudhole is comparable with their hand wrappers I recently upgraded to the RBS pro power wrapper. I looked at the Alps, and I feel like I would’ve probably been just as happy with it, but I bought the whole kit from Mudhole to save some money. Again, I think the wrappers are fairly comparable from what I could tell. But, I really like the RBS stands (Pro Stands, I think they call them). One caution, there was an issue with the foot controller with the RBS. I *think* they got that sorted. I didn’t look too far into it because I could always build my own if need be, but you might want to check that out further if it’s a concern.

Also purchased the kit. I like it. Most of what mudhole sells is compatible with the track. Feel the same way as Daryl overall.

I wasn’t thrilled with the new RBS pro being out of stock back in August when I decided to take the plunge. I didn’t like the idea of having to spend more to build it later; I especially wanted the pro rod stands…

In hindsight, I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I think my path of buying the RBS tracks, cheap stands, thread carriage, and variable speed dryer w/slip clutch was a better option for my taste even though I didn’t know it for the first couple of rods…


With my garage/shop setup, I don’t like making sawdust inside. I especially don’t want dust anywhere near the equipment I will be finishing rods with.
I had hoped to use stock cork grips for the first year or so, but a Euro Rod build has forced me into making my own fighting butt and grip to get exactly what I want. A way to turn cork outside is essential for me, so I built a little drill lathe similar to the flexcoat system so I can make grips and fighting butts…

I found out I like being able to grab the blank to stop rotation at times while applying finish, the slip clutch makes this easy…

I think a faster dryer motor could help with straighter finish lines and also leveling finish.

I plan on upgrading to the newest flexcoat motor system sooner than later for the reasons listed above.

Harry, just an FYI, but you can buy faster dryers if you are otherwise happy with your set up. And, you put the slip clutch on any of them. I *think* they’re around $20-$30 IIRC.

I thought about just getting another dryer motor, but I would like a power wrapper, even if I don’t need one…

I plan to buy the flexcoat soon and then the CRB pro stands for my track down the road as needed…
