Reaming Fighting Butt
Posted by: Tom Harrigan (---)

I'm starting to build an 8wt, the fighting butt of course needs to be reamed.

I'm trying to think through the best way to carry that out...

Chuck up a reamer in a drill and just take my time?

Any suggestions?

Many thanks!

Tom

If you can't bore all the way through it you won't get a good fit. In this case a reamer will work, but not a tapered reamer. You need something that is straight without a taper, even a drill bit of the correct size.

If you can ream all the way through, then a tapered reamer is fine.

As I stated in the link given by Travis, I use a drill bit set where the drill bit size increase in 1/64” increments. I find a drill bit that fits snuggly into the hole of the fighting butt, and turn it by hand until it bottoms out, then repeat with the next size bit until the fighting butt fits the blank. They work great if you don’t have a lathe by gradually increasing the hole size which helps to keep the hole centered.

If you have a rod lathe you can chuck the fighting butt into the head stock and center drill it with the appropriate size drill bit. However, most fighting butts are tapered or flared, so getting them centered in the chuck can be a problem. I put the fighting butt into the chuck and loosely snug it into place. I now take my live center tail stock and place it into the hole of the fighting butt, and turn on the lathe, this will get the fighting butt centered between chuck and live center. Now you just tighten down the chuck to hold the fighting butt snuggly in place, which allows you easily center drill the fighting butt by using a drill bit in the tail stock.

Thanks to everyone, this is exactly the type of input I was hoping for.

I can't bore all of the way through, so this is all great info.

All the best,

Tom

A whirl of drywall tape (1/3 to 1/2 of the width of the rolls typically sold), will fill in the small gap at the top. Superglue the ends to the blank and don’t overrun the top edge of the fighting but. The bond with the epoxy will be even stronger.
