Collapsible Rods (Flipping Stick / Swimbait Rod)

Due to room in my rod locker & front deck I would like to build some rods with a collapsible but section like the old style flipping stick. How do I do this with blanks being one piece? Do I cut the blank at the point I want it to collapse & run the top part of the blank up through the bottom of the butt section? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

If you do that, you are going to have to allow for a reduction in length equal to the amount of overlap of the two parts, which assuming the tapers match closely enough to achieve a secure fit, it likely to be roughly 4 to 5 inches.

This is easier to achieve with two identical rod blanks, but obviously the cost to do it will be twice the price of a single blank.

It probably will end up too short and weak if you do that. Do you have some old retired rods that you might cut the handle section off? Something with a larger od than the blank you are going to use. Sneak up on the cuts making sure you have enough of the blank inside the donor handle.

Have you looked at all the telescoping blank at Batson?

I was just looking at a rod I have that telescopes.
When recessed...there is about 22" of the top part inside the bottom part.
When extended...there is about 8" of the top part inside the bottom part.

...plus or minus a half inch. I say that because I'm not 100% if I had installed a plug in the bottom or not.

Just for grins...I was just looking at a blank.
The wall thickness of the blank is .84mm.
Say I were to cut the blank at 14" from the butt (at the 9mm OD mark)
I would guess that the "upper part" would start "fitting" at 7.48 mm OD mark).
I came to that number like this (9mm - (.84mm X2)).
That 7.48mm mark was 27" up from the bottom of the original blank.
That would leave roughly 13 inches of the blank overlapped while extended.

Of course this would vary from blank to blank.

Maybe try the Matagi universal butt joint system? Voodoo has them. I am going to try it on a spinning rod. I have not seen any posts here about it so far.

Thanks for all the info guys! I have a couple swimbait rods I really like that I was hoping to be able to get the blanks & make them collapsible rods but, it looks like the best route is to try to find comparable rod blanks that are already made to collapse.

Thats probably a good call. Telescoping rods parts are made to fit each other. If you cut it you have no gaurentee that the tapers will match (without any modes).
