I want to get a better understanding of CCS and any other relevant rating systems for blanks.
Are there any videos or articles available to learn? Re: CCS / rating systems. Where can I learn more?

See CCS Database at the top left? It's in there. Re: CCS / rating systems. Where can I learn more?

Thanks. Was just looking at that. Is it only for fly rods? Is there anything like that for regular fishing rods? Re: CCS / rating systems. Where can I learn more?

Checkout this thread. At the very top is a link to a Google Docs Spreadsheet. [www.rodbuilding.org]
Also here is the link to the Google Docs Spreadsheet (same one as mentioned above) that has many blanks in it beyond fly blanks. Checkout the README tab of the spreadsheet for a link to a YouTube video on how to filter down based on what you are interested in. Also has link to more background info on CCS. CCS is also for conventional rods as well as fly and surf rods. It essentially assigns a number to the power and action of a blank to more standardize the nomenclature since one companies Medium power might be what another calls a Medium Heavy.
Keep in mind though that just because some rods carry the same values doesn’t necessarily mean the rods serve the same purpose. Material, taper, softness of the tip are factors that influence a blanks usage which aren’t part of CCS. As an example, one could have a fiberglass, mag-taper, and spin-jig rod that all maintain the same AA and IP numbers but behave completely different from each other. That said, CCS helps with choosing a rod blank with similar properties of another rod, or if you know the power/action you’re wanting and want to try a different brand that you’ve never experienced before. Below is a link to the rodbuilding.org database which is a live document that contains hundreds of blanks. [www.rodbuilding.org] Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/17/2023 07:14AM by Evan Cobb. The CCS does not measure fly rods, nor any other type rod. It measures action, power and speed. Any tubular shaft having these properties can be measured by the CCS. Check the RodMaker Magazine website for the simplified system and further information.

If you want to measure the recovery speed of blanks, and some believe measure their sensitivity objectively, learn how to measure True Natural Frequency (TNF); Email me if interested. I measure CCS numbers on all my rod builds and label them with the numbers. CCS is much more valuable than manufacturers' subjective descriptions, which as mentioned before, are so inconsistent even within their own lines to be be of limited value.
I submit that two blanks of the same weight, length, CCS numbers, and TNF will behave very much the same. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
