What do you use as a substitute for abalone veneer that looks good and does not crack? Glenn McMurrian Re: Abalone Veneer cracking

The Max Flex Abalone from GetBitOutdoors works well. I've done a few rods now with it and had no cracking. These are rods with blank diameters of about .425 or so, not things like thin fly rods or ice rods.
The secret is to let the material steep in water that was taken to the boiling point, waiting until you see the "wetting" of the backing go almost all the way across. Then apply it. If you don't wait that long, it's probably going to crack. Of course the pieces you plan to use should be cut before putting them into the water so that they are totally ready to go when you make the move out of the water. It's worth trying to make it work; it's really beautiful. Re: Abalone Veneer cracking
