Hi Everyone -
Looking for a sanity check on guide choices for a NFC GammaBeta 12 weight I'm building. First target for the rod will be GTs on Christmas Island. Here's what I'm thinking: Guides 1 Baston TIMXNZG20 Size 20 Titanium Medium 2 Baston TIMXNZG12 Size 12 Titanium Medium 3 REC RSNX Size 5 (RECOIL SNAKE GUIDE IN NATURAL TITANIUM FINISH) 4 REC RSNX Size 5 5 REC RSNX Size 5 6 REC RSNX Size 5 7 REC RSNX Size 5 8 REC RSNX Size 5 9 REC RSNX Size 5 I built a 10 wt using the same guides except the RSNXs were Size 4s. I know the guides just need to be able to pass the biggest knot but I don't have the line yet and want to be somewhat cautious on this. The reel is going to have a 5" diameter which is why I'm using the 20 to start with. The Baston guides are the medium wire version. Should I go to the heavy wire version (TIXHNG)? I've seen some recommendations for a 12 wt to use a 20,16, and 12. Are there any advantages of doing this? Thanks, Mike J Re: Feedback on guide choices for 12 weight build

Your guide choices here are fine. That's a powerful rod so if you did wish to go with the heavier wire versions you won't pay much of a penalty. However, the only thing that the heavier wire really buys you is a bit more durability in handling. If you feel this is of value to you then go with the heavier wire.

A 12-wt. fly rod has in the same power range as a medium power steelhead rod rated 8 - 12 lb. line, 1/4 to 3/4 lure range, there is no need to use a heavier guide then the standard duty guides on the blank for fishing.
