Reel Seat removal

Want to remove a reel seat, the locking mechanism is loose as the threads seem to be worn down a bit so I wanted to put new reel seat on. I have the rear grip off and have new grip after I replace reel seat.
Any suggestions welcome.

Use a hacksaw and spiral cut the old seat off. Once you get a cut, slip a screwdriver blade in and twist. Usually the seat will pop loose. Be Very careful not to injure the rod blank with the saw.

Then build up the blank with arbors, masking tape is the easiest, to form a constant diameter on the arbors just smaller than the ID of the new seat. Then you can load it from the rear without having to take guides off. Make sure to totally encapsulate the arbors with epoxy. Same for the rear grip if you use one.

ditto Mr. Kirkmans suggestion.

The only change to that, is that I use a dremel tool with an abrasive cut off wheel.

Just be careful, not to cut into the blank. Take it slow and steady and you will get it right.

I just run a vertical cut down one side of the seat and another vertical cut on the opposite side of the reel seat. Put a screw driver into the slit and give it a twist and off pops the reel seat.

Then, I typically use a heat gun to heat the remaining epoxy and use a razor blade held perpendicular to the blank to scrape off the adhesive and any arbor down to the blank. Then, go ahead and slip a new reel seat, working from the butt of the rod.

Best wishes

I also use a dremel. You have to be extra careful to not cut so deeply that the blank gets cut. I stop just short of cutting all the way through if I can and then insert a large flat screw driver into the slot I cut and twist. If done right it should break the remaining part of the seat and leave the arbors and epoxy. That can be removed with heat and a dull blade.

Dremel, parallel cuts 180 degrees apart and pry with screwdriver.

If the reel seat pops off cleanly and the existing arbor is sound try fitting the new reel seat over the existing "arbor" it may save time and work fine. If it's not possible then Rogers approach is my suggestion.

Have Fun
