Cutting a rod

I’ve got a rod that is too soft when throwing a small jig to get a good hook set. If I cut a small amount from the tip top and shorten it , will it stiffen the rod up some ?

It will stiffen the tip area a bit, yes.

Keep this in mind, however, that rod length plays as much or more a role in hook setting as does rod stiffness. Shortening the rod means you won't get the same amount of "sweep." In other words, you won't be moving the hook as far nor as fast when you set the hook.

Ok thanks. I never thought of it that way

If that rod won't work for a small jig, perhaps it will work great for another application.

I’m thinking it would be a good drop shot rod

Braid with no stretch will help hook set.

I absolutely agree. Every spinning reel I own and use is now spooled with either braid or Nanofil. This is only three reels used primarily across six rods. I feel like I finally have braid to fluorocarbon knots down and will likely never go back to anything but these two choices for main lines when spinning. Generally I try to use a baitcasting or conventional reel when remotely possible, but braid and Nanofil allow me to enjoy spinning much more than I ever have. The sensitivity, hook sets, and casting distance are just so much better than with mono or full fluorocarbon. I get great hook sets on a recently built Rainshadow Eternity drop shot rod and even a mushy, thirty year old Lamiglas with braid and fluorocarbon leaders.

Use CAST x12 braid. Best in the world... High dollar but there is none better braid on the market. Best to get it online as many stores dont have it

Yes, if you cut some of the tip off it will stiffen the rod and no worry there won't be any catastrophic after effects..

I would cut off a small section (1 inch) tape on a tip and test the rod. You may not have to cut off as much as you think.

Have fun

In addition to John's comment:

Go easy on the trimming. Only trim 1/2 inch at a time.
It surprises a lot of folks who a very small change in the tip section can result in some pretty big changes in the overall action of some rods, at a certain place in the tip trimming.

Easy to make multiple trims. But, once too much has been trimmed the blank has been ruined.

Best wishes
