Al,
They have been out of business for some years. However, this simple guide alignment tool works as well as anything> [www.youtube.com] Some years ago, I made my own guide alignment tool by cutting the reel off the reel foot of an old spinning reel. This is essentially the same thing as the guide alignment tool illustrated earlier. Simply sight down the top of the spinning reel foot and adjust any guide not in line to get a clear vision from one end of the rod to the other with respect to the alignment of the guides on the rod. Or, purchase the piece of plastic from Mud Hole to do the same thing. Best wishes Re: backlash tools

Mud Hole actually offers a much better version of the tool pictured in the video that Roger linked. I bought one of those tools a few years ago, and to be honest, the upright portion isn't very stout. You can bend it back in position if need be, but it really should be stiff enough to where you wouldn't need to bend it back.
The newer version I mentioned above is made from aluminum. They sell it in pairs which not only makes no sense to me, but it also makes it it too pricey for my liking. It's $35 for the pair. Wish they offered the option of only buying one. If they did, I'd spend the $17.50 for one. Re: backlash tools

That's odd. You can only use one at a time so why force you to buy two of them? Bad business decision on somebody's part. Re: backlash tools

I did like Roger did, cut off an old spinning reel, ground the end of the foot to a point, works just fine. Doesn't come in a nice padded box, and doesn't imply that I'm a "Pro," but it works. And yes, only need one. Re: backlash tools

I took a look at the tool in the photo section, looked handy

A simple V block will hold anything round centered, center your marking device to the bottom of the V and you have your tool. Re: backlash tools

Hello All.
I just use a 3-1/2" X 3/4" X 3/8" piece of plexiglass with 2 holes drilled one in each end and a thirdhole drilled exactly between the two, stick 1" dowels into each of the end holes and a china marker in the middle one. Vol/Issue..........Article...............Author..................Page. 12/5 Center Marking Tool. By Donald Schultz. 22 Donald did his in acrylic block and his might be a hair more accurate than mine because the thickness of his block allows less chance of the marker angling while in use. The schematic in the article is simple to follow and do. Tight Wraps & Tighter Lines. Bob, New Bern, NC. Re: backlash tools

Though soft enough aluminum that they can get bent out of true… - and I’ve found the smaller one does not fit well in several size 16/17 reel seats I’ve tried :( Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
