Novice builder here. I want to begin Spey casting and build a single handed Spey in the 5-6 weight area. I have noticed a lot of rod manufactures have specific Spey blanks in sizes 7wt and up. My question I have is, How do specific Spey blanks differ (outside of length) from regular fly rods? Could I use a 5wt NFC blank and use it like a Spey? Is so Fast action or medium action? Any other questions I should be asking?
Thanks Rick Re: Single Spey

Build a Switch rod blank and you have it nailed, there is really no correlation between the two that can be explained easily other than they are both blanks, and like all things people have their preferences as far as speed. For me anyway my preference for speed single and double handed pretty much coincide, if that helps. With all the blanks out there I wouldn't use a single hand blank spey casting, they don't carry the weight of spey lines near as well in my experience, though I have used a Cortland single hand spey line a bit on my single hand G Loomis steelhead rod back in the early 90's. NFC and Rainshadow Immortal both have 6 wt. switch blanks, as does R.B. Meiser, Sage and others in a greater variety of weights and speeds. Edited 3 time(s).
