Integrated Composite IPS Handle with Undercoat

Wanted to post a few pics of a recent new integrated handle constructed using a new sleeve from Capt. Mike Pedersen at Riley Rods. We’ve all seen the 100% carbon fiber sleeves. Most have also seen the carbon / fiberglass hybrid sleeves as featured in RodMaker magazine that feature dyed fiberglass. However, the new thing is a hybrid sleeve with carbon fiber and natural fiberglass – no dye. The result is a sleeving that is very supple (about like the 100% carbon) with no seams. The natural carbon is sort of a dull cream, off white color.
Much like regular nylon thread with no CP, this natural fiberglass wets out when you do the wet lay-up and turns almost clear. Capt. Mike has all kinds of neat examples where he is using pigments with it. I started thinking of the concept of an underwrap and wondering what would happen if you painted your handle before you did the wet layup. So, I seal coated an integrated handle and spray painted it with metallic blue Krylon. I then resealed it and did the wet lay-up with just a little bit of silver metallic microflake. The results are what you see here…wish the photos could capture the depth and luster. In addition to being light and comfortable, a handle properly constructed using these techniques will outlive the owner.
Sleeving, grip clamps and RR321 epoxy from Riley Rods. MHX Popping Rod blank, IPS seat, SK2 nut, and EVA for foregrip from Mudhole Tackle. Thanks so much to Andy Dear, Tom Kirkman, RodMaker Magazine, and Mike Pedersen for teaching me how to do this.
