Spiral Wrap Surf Rod

I'm posting a few photos of a spiral-wrapped Lamiglas Tri-Flex CSB 138 2M in action near Seaside, Florida in early June 2006. This rod has caught several fish, but this is the first time it was truly tested.

The set up is a modified O'Quinn spiral wrap using Fuji Hardloy guides. In test casting, I found that you really do need running guides and a tip no smaller than size 16 to pass a heavy (130 lb.) shock leader. I was not comfortable bending a stripping guide to get a size 16 tip, so I went with Hardloys. The sizes were 30-25-20-16s out to the tip.

The rod casts beautifully and fights fish very well. Many thanks to Bob McKamey, Tom K. and RodMaker Magazine Volume 7 #1 for teaching me all I needed to know to build some great surf rods.

More pics to follow.
