What is the best ways to make an old glass fishing rod as transparent as possible. I have an older one I would like to rebuild/rewrap and would appreciate any tips or advice. Thank you

Would you explain or clarify your statement: "What is the best ways to make an old glass fishing rod as transparent as possible."

Thanks!

If you’re referring to transparent, or “invisible”, guide wraps visit fiberglassflyrodders.com. Individuals there have described their techniques frequently.

Clear, invisible, transparent or ghost wraps are not complicated. Send me an e-mail or let us know here if clear wraps are what you are after and I will let you know my process.

Robert,
I too would like clarification on what is exactly meant by “make an old glass fishing rod as transparent as possible”. The blank itself? A clear coat on the blank? The thread wraps?

I do opologize. I was originally wondering about the blank. It has turned hazy and yellow but after I've cleaned the blank back as best as possible I was going to attempt to put some ghost wraps on it. I do appreciate the feedback. I've had some time gaps online due to a hernia I've been dealing with. Thank you

Robert,
Thanks for the clarification. As for the blank itself, “It has turned hazy and yellow but after I've cleaned the blank back as best as possible…”. Since you are rewrapping the guides anyway, completely strip ALL of the finish off the blank; it should strip-off / flake-off quite easily using a razor blade held perpendicular to the blank. Lightly sand with 400 - 600. Apply a coat of PG. As for the ghost wraps, the general consensus (and through my testing = I agree) is to use Hitena silk thread in the “natural” color. I also found that CTS Crystal Coat works extremely well = extremely thin to penetrate the thread and COMPLETELY FILL THE TUNNELS and may be the clearest, most non yellowing of all the thread epoxies. I suspect (note the word “suspect”) that PG would be a good choice for the thread wraps as well but cannot confirm.
