It’s very easy to match a blank’s taper “close enough” with a tapered reamer that has a different taper. Once I get to the diameter on which ever end of the grip comes into dimension without putting the other one over, I just move up to a more narrow section of the reamer and spin the grip with hand pressure on the portion that still needs stock removed. This method is really useful on “Point Blanks” with their extremely slight rear taper. Re: making a reamer out of sand blasting grit.

I noticed a couple comments earlier about the Ultimate Reamers that Batson carries, so I figured I put on my shill hat and give my two cents. I get it; $300 bucks for a single reamer stings, but only on the front end. If you buy the one size needed to remove the bulk of the material from your regular blank size range, they actually pay themselves pretty quick, then, they start paying you. This is assuming you value your build labor somewhere between $30 and $45 an hour and build around 50+ rods a year. The only challenge in selling Ultimate Reamers is selling a builder their first one. After that, builders usually want 1-2 more after experiencing the pure blissfulness of working with the tool. I've never had a single person tell me they were sorry they spent the money, not one.
I'm not saying there aren't some awesome DIY fabricated reamers out there. We have some pretty cool one's here that we've made. But, if you're building a fair amount of rods and are actually measuring cost/benefit when it comes to your time, there's just nothing I've seen that compares to an Ultimate Reamer. -Geoff -The Batson TEAM BatsonEnterprises.com Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
