Hello Rich & Spencer.
I don't remember it in the 60's but I was a kid in the 60's. In 1982 Dale P. Clemens wrote his book on "Custom Rod Thread Art" and NCP thread was mentioned throughout the book although it's origin was not disclosed that I saw. I looked into "The Complete Book Of Tackle Making" by C. Boyd Pfeiffer (1993) although my edition is the 1999 edition, it spoke of NCP but no explanation of when it was developed. When you find out let us know if you can, I will look into it as I can find time, the answer is out there somewhere. Thanks. Tight Wraps & Tighter Lines. Bob, New Bern, NC. Re: NCP Thread -- History

Hi Tom.
I've been going through my books and a book titled "How to Make Your Own Fishing Rods" by Mel Marshall with a copyright of 1978 has no info about NCP thread although he speaks of Gudebrod's "Space Dye Thread" but no NCP. Have you any idea who came out with the first ones? Thanks Tom. Tight Wraps & Tighter Lines. Bob, New Bern, NC. Re: NCP Thread -- History

I know we were using it in the late 60's and early 70's for our builds in SoCal at Mr CB's Custom Rods in San Bernardino Ron Weber Re: NCP Thread -- History

I have a substantial supply of Gudebrod NCP thread in both C and D sizes, still on their original wooden spools from the 60's. Re: NCP Thread -- History

Here's an idea. - If you can't find the color you want in NCP, make your own.
I'd like to build a dispensing system that would apply color preserver as you are wrapping. (quite the challenge). The impetus for this is I continue to have bad luck using conventional thread and adding CP after the wrap. It seems I always miss some spot around the guide foot. I theorize the underside of the thread doesn't get any preserver normally but it is not an issue on a compact wrap. However, if the the thread is suspended above the blank like it will be for the short distance as it comes over the guide foot then you'll get some bleed through of the epoxy darkening the color. Totally soaking the thread would alleviate this problem. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
