Hi everyone. This is an amazing forum and a bit intimidating to a new builder. I hope you can forgive the new guy as my questions may seem rudimentary in nature. It's such a great opportunity to seek advice from experts before I buy all the wrong stuff. I will try to keep my questions related to guides and placement. I'm building an ultralight with a size 1000 reel, 6 lbs braid on the NFC FW 661-1(SM) 78" length, 3.8 size tip.
Now the help. NFC recommends 7 guides positioned from tip at 5", 10.74", 17.21", 24.43", 32.38", 41.07", 50.5". I have "almost" purchased the following Pac Bay Minima guides 16H, 8H, 5M, 5, 4, 4, 4, tip 4. I came to this conclusion after reading many forum posts. Is this suitable? It seems like I'm missing 1 or 2 guides when I look at other blank mfg guide recommendations. Is 16H too small? Thank you in advance. dave Re: New builder guide size & placement help

Are you building a spinning or bait casting rod? Also, you don't need to use so many sizes. About 3, butt, mid and as many running guides as you need for casting, the same with possibly two mid guides for spinning. 3 different sizes, 4 at the very most, will suit just about any rod you can think of.

Thanks, Tom. This will be a spinning rod. When you say mid guides, is that what the M stands for on some guides? I see guides size 5 and 5M. Or were you just referencing the mid-position of the blank? Re: New builder guide size & placement help

No, just the guides in the middle or what many call transition guides. I'd take a look at this: [www.rodbuilding.org]
Also you have the MicroWave Guides which are very easy to use and the Fuji KR system which will also figure guide spacing and sizing for you. ......... Re: New builder guide size & placement help

I assume you want to build a KR-like spinning rod using Minima Match (M) guides for the reduction train (16M, 8M, and 5M) and Minima Fly (F) guides as the running guides. If this is true than the guides you have selected will work just fine. However, I would use all size 4F running guides and add one or two more running guides, for eight to nine total guides. The size 16M based reduction train will work great for a 1000 size reel and light line. The NFC guide placement chart is probably based on using a standard handle length with a New Guide Concept (NGC) guide train, which traditionally uses larger guides than the KR concept. Thus, it’s only a suggestion for a starting point based on what they use for their production rods, which are usually a compromise so that multiple size reels and line can be used. So if you want to use a KR concept then ignore the NFC guide placement chart and use the KR GPS at Anglers Resource for your starting point. Most of the time I use one or two more running guides than then the GPS suggests. Doing this allows for progressive guide spacing and more evenly distributes the load along the rod length.
[anglersresource.net] So basically your butt guide (16M) will be placed about 19” in front of the reel spool and the the choke guide (first running guide) will be placed about 20” in front of the butt guide. The other two reduction guides will be placed progressively between the butt guide and the choke guide. The remaining running guides will be placed between the choke guide and the tip top. Don’t be afraid to move the choke guide and/or butt guide in or out a little to get the spacing you like. Again the KRGPS gives a suggestion for a good starting point. Then do a two line static test to fine tune the guide placement. Finally, test cast to determine if the layout casts smoothly, quietly, and long. If you have any additional question please feel free to ask them and we will try our best to help. Norm Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/20/2022 11:45AM by Norman Miller. Keep the 5M and drop the 5 and use another 4 instead. You may also want to go with a 4.5 tip top to help accommodate leader knots or small swivels when casting. A 16 stripper ring is a good size for the 1000 sized reel. Re: New builder guide size & placement help

The different guides sizes with a letter on the end are discribing a size with different heights. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
