Some moisture and/or grit got in to the uplocking ring that holds the reel seat of my Steffens 7 weight, a rod I love to fish. I’ve tried ice, but no luck. Either the barrel expanded or the ring contracted, but it’s frozen pretty tight. Any suggestions?
Thanks Mel Re: “Frozen” uplocking ring

Mel,
Spray it down with PBS -- power blaster spray. [www.amazon.com] This is a penetrating fluid that can make a lot of stuck things get free. Spray it in and let it sit for 30 minutes. Spray more in, and let it sit for 30 minutes. Give it a try and see how it goes. Mel, is there a locking ring nut behind the uplocking ring to hold it in place. If so, can you unlock the nut? If you have no luck with this method, take a piece of rubber or neoprene on the stuck ring to prevent it from being marred up and grasp the rind with a pair of water pump pliers and gently work on it to free it up. If you use the pliers, be sure NOT to position the pliers on the enlarged portion of the ring that covers the reel foot for fear of crushing it and making it too close to allow the use of the ring over the reel foot. If you do use the rubber and plier method, use DNA or equivalent to remove all of the penetrating oil from the surface of the ring to allow a better grip with the rubber and pliers. Edited 1 time(s).
