Looking for some direction, Seems the rheostat on my American Tackle rod wrapper has gone belly up. Where and how's the fastest way to get a new rheostat so I can get back up and running. It's the 110V model.
Any and all help is welcomed. Also can anyone voice their thoughts as to why there is even a speed control dial when the foot pedal is a speed controller also ? Fishing is not a matter of life or death, it's much more important than that Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/30/2021 07:02AM by John Sansevera. Re: Rod Wrapper down

the rheostat controls the maximum rpm's of the motor when the foot pedal is fully depressed. allows you to fine tune speed to your liking. American Tackle could probably help you out with replacement Re: Rod Wrapper down

Just about every rheostat I've ever seen will tell you, on the piece somewhere, all the specs you need to buy a new one. Volts, resistance range, and the current it will take. The motor on your wrapper will also tell you the amount of current it uses to run. Re: Rod Wrapper down

Just remove the current dimmer and wiring that is in the wrapper.
Then, just make a solid connection between the ac power and the motor. Then, go over to Home Depot and pick up a dimmer similar to this one: [www.homedepot.com] Plug the dimmer into the wall, plug the wrapper into the dimmer plug and go back to wrapping. I have not used this particular dimmer for the application that you want to use, but I believe that it will work fine. ------------------------------------------------------- However, I have used this particular speed controller to control the speed of a universal AC motor which is exactly what is being used on your wrapper. I have such a motor on a mini chop saw and use this controller to control the top speed. It works very well and it is inexpensive as well. Again, just bypass the current speed control in your wrapper so that the ac goes directly to the pedal and motor. Then, unplug the wrapper, plug in the speed controller and plug the wrapper into the speed controller. Switch the control to variable speed, press down the foot pedal and dial in your maximum speed and start wrapping: [www.amazon.com] If you order it today, you can have it on Tuesday - depending on your location. ----------------------------------------------- Essentially both of these speed controllers use a Triac semi conductor in conjunction with other circuit elements and a variable resistor to reduce the power going to the motor and the pedal. Best wishes. Re: Rod Wrapper down

Roger, I bypassed the speed controller for now and it work's great. My rod drying motor is part of the set up so the speed controller if added between the wall and wrapping unit it's going to affect the dryer performance. I'm up and running, I'll deal with it when I have time, thanks for the help. Fishing is not a matter of life or death, it's much more important than that Re: Rod Wrapper down
