My son's float rod will not come apart at the first ferrule. I was going to remove the ferrule wrap on the female side and try a bit of heat. Any help would be appreciated .

Use rubber dish-washing gloves on both hands and twist.
If that fails - shape packing tape into loops with sticky side out and use one on each hand and twist. There was a reply here awhile back stating that carbon contracts with heat and expands with cold. So the opposite than thought. Herb see video using tape: [www.youtube.com] Edited 1 time(s). I have had success by wrapping the stuck ferrule area with a ziploc bag of crushed ice for a few minutes which shrinks the materials and permits separating the sections. Re: Stuck ferrule

Seems counter-intuitive, but the Ross method often works. I think it shrinks the wall thickness of the female side yielding a bigger "hole." Worth a try. Re: Stuck ferrule

Don't heat it - that's a mistake.
You need a larger diameter surface upon which to apply your hand force. The magazine has covered this with a simple tool but I can't explain it here. Wrap something around both sections, some non-slip padding, tape, etc., and twist the two sections apart. You just need some way to get your force to the problem without slipping. ............... Bill,
Another thing that works very well for most stuck rod sections. With dry hands, put the rod behind your knees, with one hand grasping the rod on each side of the joint. Then, use your leg muscles to spread your hands and at the same time separate the two rod sections. A persons leg muscles are typically the strongest muscles in the body and thus will work when a persons hands and arms are not strong enough to separate the rod. Take care. Re: Stuck ferrule

As others have stated - Ice! Never had one I couldn't get apart by icing it. Be patient and keep it tightly packed. Re: Stuck ferrule

Whenever I put rod sections together I take the male end of each spigot ferrule, lay it alongside my nose, and spin it a few times. There is always enough skin oil to lubricate the connection and prevent jam-ups. Re: Stuck ferrule

Perhaps rig up something like a "slide knocker" on the male side of things (use tape to protect the blank, etc.) hold onto the female end, and then lift and drop the slide knocker to see if the straight "knocking" action will jar it apart. (Look up "slide hammer puller" to see what I'm referring to - it's an automotive pulling tool.)
Good luck. Re: Stuck ferrule

Is this a metal, or glass to glass ferrule? It makes a difference.

Have not tried this but have heard it can work. Take a random orbital sander than has a soft pad with velcro type paper attachment no sand paper. Place rod on hard surface with the female tip section unsupported from the ferrule forward. Work the sander around the rod on the male side of ferrule right at the joint. Supposedly the vibrations will work the tip section loose. Again have not tried it but don't see how any damage could be caused. Would not hurt to tape off the area your going to run the sander on.
