Building a 5wt with carbon fiber grips. I bought the CFX CF grip from mudhole. The reel seat is slightly larger than the cutout. Any suggestions? The CF comes right to the edge of the cutout so I'm not sure reaming it out is an option. Thanks. Gary. Re: Reel Seat cutout

I use a Dremel tool with an aluminum oxide grinding stone. Easy to gently move it around the perimeter of the hole to slightly enlarge it. Check for fit as you go.

The Dremel with a small sanding drum works very well, have done it a number of times/ Re: Reel Seat cutout

Thanks. The cutout is so thin I'm afraid I'll damage the CF. Is that possible? Re: Reel Seat cutout

I really want to use this reel seat. I just looked up the diameters. Guess I missed it. They hand.le is .795 and the OD on the reel seat is .864 Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/08/2020 08:55PM by Gary Goldsmith. Re: Reel Seat cutout

Exchange the grip for a larger one. If not possible, then stockpile it for another build and buy another. Not that expensive.

With those dimension you would only be taking off about 35 thousandths off the edge of the existing hole which is not much. I would think it is doable. If your concerned about the the integrity of the cf coat the end of the grip with epoxy before opening up the hole. Clamp the grip vertical tape it off so no epoxy runs down the side. Couple coats of very thin epoxy. Will level out nice. Once cured no chance of the cf on the face being damaged as you sand the edge. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
