So I posted a few weeks ago i bought a Wen 3424T wood lathe so I could start making my own cork handles. Bought the tailstock live center and a drill chuck, tried putting the 18" x 1/4" mandrel in that setup and its too long. I also purchased a Nova G3 chuck, Nova mini spigot jaw set which came today, put that on the lathe and it wont tighten down to 1/4", so that doesnt work either. I have been waiting 3 weeks to build 4 rods because I want to turn all the handles for them. I know I can cut the 18" mandrels down to 12 inches and make it work, but I dont want to. There has to be a set of jaws that will tighten down to less than a 1/4". I neeed help, or to take up drinking, after 60 years of never drinking alchohol I dont know how that will turn out either. Please help. Keith Langford Re: I cant Wen

Spigot Jaws generally tighten down to zero. Not sure why Nova's won't But you have other options. Are you going to have to bore/ream the cork larger to install it on the rod? If so, why wait? Bore the rings out and mount them on the larger size mandrel which is going be 5/16 or 3/8. The jaws you have should handle that.

Keith. Remove the jaws entirely from the Nova G3. Without any jaws attached it will tighten down to about .190" . Thats how I use my WEN lathe when using 1/4" mandrels. Properly supported the Nova G3 can clamp up to around .650" without Jaws. I don't own the spigot jaws as they cover similar sizes to the pin and bowl jaws I have. For clamping soft/finicky things like wine corks or rubberized cork for fighting butts, I will use longer screws and spacers of different diameter in the jaw holding threads. The Nova G3 is not as universal as a metal chuck, but with a little ingenuity it is quite capable. Re: I cant Wen

Thank you both, I purchased a Collet chuck with 5 collets last night. Hopefully they will arrive soon. That should end my search for using mandrels, up side is I know have a nice system in place for other uses of the lathe, such as woodwork. In the process of making a bunch of cork clamps now. You will find the collet system much better for mandles than a chuck! More secure and centered. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
