Hi, I'm trying to build a custom rod, I've bought an mhx 8' 4wt, it have a 0.322" butt, I want to use a pacbay A7V, I can only find half well cork with id 0.35" so bigger than blank.. Do I have to make arbor for cork too? Re: Info about cork on mhx fly blank.

Yes, you will need arbors for the half Wells grip too. Before you make the arbors, read the Surface Preparation article in this site's Library. Do the Water Break Free technique to the blank area that will be under the grip, build up the arbors, and be certain to fill the gaps between the arbors with epoxy adhesive. It's really simple to do and is cheap insurance against a grip or reel seat ever coming loose. Good luck. Re: Info about cork on mhx fly blank.

Use a layer or two of dry wall tape. It is very light and works very well.

The clearance is not very large approximately .014" on each side, I suggest you mask off the area where the grips will be and coat the sections with epoxy or high build, put it on the dryer motor and let it level. If one coat is not sufficient to get a snug fit then add additional coats until you do.. Don't worry about the weight of the added epoxy because no matter what method you use it will add some extra weight but not hinder the performance. Have fun John Re: Info about cork on mhx fly blank.

Here's a very simple and quick way to do it. Make a spiraled wrap or two with very heavy thread or cord. Whatever you need to take up the space. You might need two layers up front and one closer to the rear to adjust for the blank taper. Get it snug. Ream the cork a tad if you need to. Apply epoxy and screw the grip onto the thread layer.

I would simply wrap the blank with masking tape as needed, coat with epoxy and move on.
When I do wraps like this, I use 1/4 inch wide tape with a space of about 1/16th inch between the rows of tape to fill with epoxy and thus you have a solid epoxy to blank to reel seat connection. Simple, easy and fool proof. Good luck Re: Info about cork on mhx fly blank.

Like Norm I use "fiberglass" drywall tape. It works really well and because the tape is a mesh the epoxy gets all the way down to the rod blank for a permanent bond
