The adhesive on the back of masking tape is petroleum based.
As a result, any solvent that will dilute a petroleum based product will work well. Mineral spirits is the first choice. Of course wd-40 - which is petroleum based will work, as will goo gone which is also petroleum based. What ever you use, be sure to test the solvent in a location - like the rod butt that will be covered when the rod is finished. You want to be sure that the material used to remove the masking tape will not remove any of the rod finish. Good luck Re: How to get old dry masking tape off a rod blank

Good advice on getting it off, what's next? I would not apply epoxy directly after using these products, but would clean the blank with alcohol, then do a mild rub with a fine Scotch brite pad, wipe with paper towel, then apply any epoxy needed. Might be OK without this final step, but I know it will OK with this step. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
