Hi All,My work mate is looking to by his first med/big spin reel.He is looking at the Shimano Spheros range which I believe has a parallel foot. How dose this effect rod selection in regards to the guides. He will be either using 30/50 lb braid on a 6'6 to7 ft rod mainly soaking bait.Congrats to everyone here for making this site so usefull, helpfull and freindly. Also leaders up to about 80lb using fg knot(yet to teach him).Cheers Scott Re: rods for parrallel foot spin reels

Line is pulled, not shot, from the spool so if you're referring to the angle between reel foot and spool, otherwise known as "spool upsweep," it is really of no consequence. However, if you're trying to set up a NGC system using spool upsweep angle as a locator for the butt guide, it can't be done. Better anyway, to just use one of the newer and better incarnations of the NGC that don't rely on spool upsweep whatsoever.

Yes Tom was refering to the upsweep.By new incarnation of ngc are you refering to kr concept? Not looking to build a this rod (yet) .After advice to buy a factory rod for a reel with no upsweep.???? Re: rods for parrallel foot spin reels

I just attach the rod upside down with reel facing up and spool removed and attach a light string from the extended spool spindle to where i decide to put the choke guide and tie off to the top of the choke . With the line taught i just place guides that fit the height of the string to where each guide ring bottom just touches the string as i move along out toward the choke . The 27 X method tells you where to locate the choke based on spool diameter but since i use light line i was able to move the choke closer than recommended while using heavier line will probably keep you further out with the choke .
With a Spheros and a 7 foot rod the 27 X method will put you way out there but tom has said just use the tip top as the choke guide since the 27 X method works for any length rod . Re: rods for parrallel foot spin reels

If you tape guides to the rod you can easily move the guides after you test cast it to find which guide placement works best - a truly custom built rod. If you can't tell the difference between two different guide placements use either one. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
