Lynn,
Boat flipping only breaks rods if something lands on top of the rods and there is something solid underneath the rod when it happens. However, I have seen a boat hit a big wave and toss all of the occupants about in the boat and breaking several rods all at the same time. I have also seen where a fellow was working on a motor and leaned his rod against a seat and the engine cowl was laid on top of the rod and it broke. I have seen where a wave hits a boat and puts the person back into his seat - against which a rod was laid and the rod broke. Many many ways to break a rod without even trying. Be safe Re: Broken rods

Herb,
Surely you have heard the various stories of how the rod that comes into your shop ended up being broken haven't you? Re: Broken rods

Roger ..... the boat flipping that Lynn is referring to, is flipping a fish into the boat, using the rod. It's a technique many bass fisherman, myself included, use when fishing up close and personal, in heavy cover.
There is a right way and a wrong way to boat flip a fish. With that said, the right way can quickly turn into the wrong way if the fish does something unexpected once the process is started.. And some guys do it the wrong way all the time. I am guilty of boat flipping a fish the wrong way, on purpose. Luckily, I have yet to break a rod doing it. As I do boat flip fish, (usually anything 3 lbs and under) when I started building my own rods I took the advice of Tom Kirkman and added extra guides in the running portion of the guide train. I've pretty much adopted the practice on all of the rods I build, regardless if it's a rod that I would muscle a fish with. For me it's a peace of mind thing, and it has the added benefit of extracting every bit of power the rod blank has to offer. Re: Broken rods

Actually i haven't , maybe if i had a shop i would but no such luck. I have heard through the grapevine the " My dog confused my rod tip with a bone" stories though so i suppose i do understand. I have watched a few of those bass shows and it seems some fish they boat flip and some fish they lay down and grab the fishes mouth to lift it . Re: Broken rods
