Read in the archives about using permagloss to attach guides without the thread and was wondering if it would work on an nfc delta blank which is unsanded and has ridges. Also does it actually work and last? Re: Permagloss

Permagloss is not a glue, it is a moisture activated polyurethane finish. Never heard of using it to attach guides without the need for thread. As a finish it works extremely well giving an extremely light and durable finish lasts a long time. Have not handled an NFC Delta blank yet, but if there are ridges the Permagloss will not smooth them out. You could wet sand the blank using 800-1000 grit wet/dry paper to get a smith finish, and then clear coat with Permagloss. I have clear coated a few NFC HM, IM and SM blanks with Permagloss for a few people that wanted a clear coat on them, and the came out looking great. For the most part I just leave these NFC blanks unfinished, they also look good.

It will work beautifully, just follow the article. As you can see from the guide they are destroying in the article, they don't come off easily. You will have to come up with an initial adhesive though, I don't think Diamondite is available for some time now. Originating company's name was Swifty I believe. Re: Permagloss

Just make sure that you have good ventilation when using Permagloss as it contains xylene and has quite a strong smell The best day to be alive is always tomorrow !! Think out side the box when all else fails !!! Wi. Re: Permagloss

I have some five minute epoxy for under the guide foot. I don't know if I should sand down the ridges under the guide or not. Re: Permagloss

You could always paint the guide foot with Permagloss and set it on the blank in the butt section where you won't see it later and test it. It's got far better adhesive qualities than epoxy finishes and it destroys razor blades at a far faster rate than epoxy while stripping a rod. Re: Permagloss

I guess I misread your OP. Are you serious about gluing your guides to the blank without using thread? If so why? I cannot imagine them not failing sooner or later. If there was something better than thread to hold guides in place we would be using it! If you want an invisible wrap use white silk thread and finish epoxy.

Whatever flips your flipper. Still don’t know what the advantages are.

I guess I just have to try it. As far as advantages, it would make the rod lighter and just be cool to show off. Re: Permagloss

yes it will work.
Bill Stevens built the original rods done that way. They held up to being tortured and held better then guides that were wrapped. tore the guides up before it would pull them loose To the best of my memory, He did not use any other adhesive to hold guides in place. adding another adhesive would detract from the strength of the permaglos the original article was in Rod Maker Mag. It just so wild looking, is there anybody that bass fishes with a threadless rod out there in .org land? A small dab of epoxy only goes under the guide foot and the permagloss over the top. Re: Permagloss

When Bill Stevens originally did them. they were on bass rods
But I have not personally built or fished with them Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
