Is there a shelf life to EVA? I built 5 rods about 8 years ago and still have some EVA I would like to use. I would like to have the rods last a good 10 years after building and wonder if I should use new EVA. The EVA was stored inside the house in a closet. Re: EVA shelf life

No shelf life. However, if you kept them in a box in the closet.... lol
They should be fine to use even if you build a rod with them 20 years from now. Re: EVA shelf life

However, if the EVA was stored in the middle of the exposed Sahara desert, I would expect that the life of the foam would be about 5 years or so.
The UV rays do get after the EVA over time. Good luck Re: EVA shelf life

Hypalon tends to crust over on the surface if exposed to heat or sun. But a little sanding of the top layer generally brings it back. EVA is must more resistant to heat and sun. If yours have been stored indoors, I suspect it's fine.

The EVA as you describe should have an indefinite shelf life. HOWEVER once the EVA goes into service it must kept clean, handled and stored with care to maintain its durability and appearance. I have two rods with EVA grips over 20 years old and are still in fine shape. If you still have concerns think about this, chances are you will do a little sanding and possibility of shaping the EVA if so, then any material removed from the OD will expose "new and fresh" EVA. Use the EVA and enjoy your craft. Good fishing John Re: EVA shelf life
