I am looking to build an in-line ice fishing rod with and without using a spring bobber.
Does anybody know of any in-line tip tops out there for rod with 4-5.5 rod tips. Or what can be used? Or is it not needed. Thanks, Doug See you on the water, Doug Captain Paddlefoot Re: In-line tip top or ideas

Doug,
What is your reason to build an in-line ice fishing rod? I assume that when you use the words in-line - you are speaking of a rod where the fishing line runs inside the blank? Take care Re: In-line tip top or ideas

Sea Guide, how you going to get line thru a 4.5 blank tip? Think inline blanks also had a spiral inside to cut friction. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/15/2017 03:20PM by Spencer Phipps. Re: In-line tip top or ideas

I would think that line running inside the blank with the ridges would be a great place for ice to form. I know how much fun ice can be when winter steelhead fishing with regular gear. Re: In-line tip top or ideas

This is for a technique called long rodding. It is for hole hopping. They don"t sit down, always standing. The guys fishing these type of rods say they are very sensitive. The line is protected from the wind. They are fishing less than 10 feet of water. Basically as deep as they can set the hook and lift straight up without reeling. They are covering water.
There is no concern for freezing as they don't reel the line in often. I am not even sure a tip top is necessary as there will be a spring bobber tied at the end. So I am looking for options, ceramic eyelets, in-line tip tops or maybe nothing. Looking for ideas. Thanks, Doug See you on the water, Doug Captain Paddlefoot Re: In-line tip top or ideas

Doug,
I have built hundreds of ice fishing rods that are used by hard core fisherman standing outside in the cold. Most of these folks are fishing Canadian lakes and they often do it in temperatures that are at temperatures that are colder than -10 degrees F. Most of these folks are mobile and cover many acres of ice every day when they fish. They use their snow mobiles to cover vast areas of the ice in search of big fish. To avoid icing issues, I never use guides any smaller than size 8. For some of the clients, I don't use guides smaller than size 10. Often in the course of a day, they might drill a couple of hundred holes - spread over several miles. Often the water that they fish is 50-70 feet deep. So, the lines are let out and reeled out constantly - no matter the wind or temperatures. Never a wish or desire to have a tiny hole in a rod to try to let a line move through. However, if fishing shallow water as you indicated and apparently fishing smaller fish, I can understand the desire for the rod that you mention. By the way, this was a picture of a very happy client fishing the 1 st day after receiving one of the ice rods. [www.rodbuilding.org] Edited 2 time(s).
