My Flex Coat 5/16 Pilot Bit wore out. I need a new one. Mud Hole has advertised the 5/16 in their last few catalogs but tell me they cant get them anymore when I try to order one. Do any of you builders have the a 5/16 Pilot Drill Bit you would be willing to sell? Thanks Re: Help! Need a Flex Coat Pilot Bit

Steve,
Go to the hardware store and buy a long 5/16th inch spade bit. Take the spade bit to the grinder and grind sharp edges on the top of the paddle in the direction that you want the bit to rotate and you will have your drill bit. You said that the Pilot bit wore out, is it just a case where the edge of the bit has gotten dull?. If so, just take the bit to your grinder or local blade sharpener and put a new edge on the edges of the bit. You follow this process, except that you are doing the sharpening on the top end of the spade bit - rather than the end of the spade bit: [www.youtube.com] If you don't have a grinder - get one. You can then do all of your sharpening as needed. Or, if you don't have a 1 inch belt sander, get one. The one inch belt sander can be used for so many things in rod building, including sharpening drill bits of all types. Pick up a selection of various grades of sand paper to take care of all of your sharpening needs. Get belts in grits ranging from 60 grit to 600 grit and you will be set.
