Thread transition abalone to blank

I am building an offshore rod with abalone inlay. I am having a fit because of course the abalone isn't perfectly square around the blank and my tread keeps falling off the edge making it uneven as I wrap. Is there a trick to this? Something has to be simpler than I'm making it.
Thanks in advance Re: Thread transition abalone to blank

Have only done this once and hopefully someone has a more elegant solution. I made a trim wrap of about six turns using size A nylon next to the abalone and then applied a coat of epoxy finish to the abalone extending the finish a couple mm beyond the trim band. When the epoxy cured there was a ramp of sorts from the blank across the trim band up to the abalone. Then using size D nylon I made the trim wrap I wanted from just beyond and over the initial trim band up and onto the abalone. Another application of epoxy over everything and it was done. The "cheater" ramp was hardly visible.
Hopefully, we'll both benefit from someone who has done this a bunch and uses a better technique. Re: Thread transition abalone to blank

That is much better than what I have tried. I'll do that tomorrow. Thanks! Re: Thread transition abalone to blank

I start next to the Abalone and wrap away from the desired length then just roll the thread back on top of itself and wrap back to the Abalone and over the Edge. Re: Thread transition abalone to blank

Hello Gervais.
I just coat over the abalone with epoxy going 1/4" over the edge of the abalone let it dry, then apply my wraps right up the ramp and onto the abalone then coat with a second coat of epoxy. Tight Wraps & Tighter Lines. Bob, New Bern, NC. Re: Thread transition abalone to blank

Thanks, I already put epoxy on and I brought it to the edge of the abalone, making sure to tie it in without going over the edge....Then feathered it down the blank for a nice smooth transition. We will see how it goes. I have a few more to do so maybe I will have to get it up over the edge.
Great ideas! Re: Thread transition abalone to blank

Trim the veneer square, then start thread at the edge of the veneer and wrap out to the desired distance then overlay the thread and come back up and over top of the veneer a tiny bit.
