Forhan locking technique

I just wrapped some micro guides on a spinning rod build(first time). I thought about using the Forhan locking technique but was concerned about being able to adjust the guides after wrapping was complete. Are the guides adjustable after using this technique? It doesn't seem like there would be much play. I ended up just wrapping past the single foot guides, then added trim band. Jon Hood Re: Forhan locking technique

Yes, there is the ability to move guides slightly. Probably less than without the lock. I usually don't use the lock on micros as they are so close to the rod they don't snag on anything. Never had one move after epoxy. I always use it on KLH guides and other tall guides. Re: Forhan locking technique

Jon,
Yes you can move the guides that have been wrapped with a Forhan lock. As mentioned above, they don't move as much as those guides without a lock wrap, but they will allow for guide adjustment as long as the guides are not out of alignment too much when wrapping. I use a lock wrap on all of my guide wraps. It cuts down problems in the future. Don Campbell don@sensorfishingrods.com Re: Forhan locking technique

Yes you move the guide some, just don't trim your thread tags till you have the guides where you want them. Re: Forhan locking technique

great tip Spencer, I've had that bite me in the butt and ended up rewrapping because once moved the guide unraveled. Re: Forhan locking technique

I never do a single foot wrap without the Forhan lock. Do not want a guide too pull out on a customers fishing trip for any reason! And as stated above you can adjust them slightly. Re: Forhan locking technique

I am really impressed with so many of you utilizing a locking thread wrap for single foot guides. I thought I was one of the very few taking the time and effort to afford my customers with the added security they deserve over a store-bought rod. While I have developed my own style or method of doing such, every single-foot guide on a 2-10lb rod SHOULD be, and over 10lb MUST be wrapped- locked as far as I am concerned. Another of the multitudes of differences between store-bought VS a custom fishing instrument. That’s why we make the big-bucks, right? I don't use minis that often, but the ones I've used have slight bumps on the side that would hold the guide in place after it is wrapped and keep it from pulling out. I also run 3 to 4 wraps past the the post to aid in blocking a pull out. I personally don't think Forhan locks are necessary on minis. I do use them on regular A frame spinning guides which take a lot more stress. You also have more room to work with the Forhan lock. I have never had a mini pull out.
