On a purchase of a 9', 5 wt, 4 section flyrod blank discovered it had a split end in the second section nearest the
butt (handle/reelseat section). It was in the female end of the section, a split of about .28 inches (or 7.17 mm).
Question: will an extra long thread wrap solve the problem? Afraid to apply glue before hand because fear it
could leach into interior of blank and resist male section (of handle/ reel seat section) seating properly.
Is it worth the repair.... OR SHOULD I repair it with a fiberglass oversleeve? But wouldn't that affect the
action of rod? HELP....

I would send the blank back and ask for a new one, it should be under warranty since you never used it. Most reputable manufacturers/suppliers should replace it, if not your fault. If they refuse to replace it then you can think about repairing it. A fiber glass/graphite sleeve would be the best fix, basically it would be like a ferrule reinforcementt that is flush with the blank end. After gluing the sleeve in place clean any glue leaking inside of the ferrule using a Q-tip soaked with alcohol. This fix should have little effect on the action of the rod due its location. Hope this helps.

Anything you add to the rod will affect it's speed (not necessarily the action, which is an altogether different thing). But I would do as Norman suggests and contact the manufacturer first. If they are unable to help, then enact a repair.

SHOULD SLEEVE BE 3/4" OR LONGER?

It sounds like the split is right around the ferrule area. If this is correct then make the sleeve long enough to cover the split with a little overlap and to be flush with the butt end of the blank section. This will make the repair less noticeable. Taper the tip end of the sleeve to blend to the blank, do this before gluing to the blank . If possible, position the stripper guide so the guide wrap covers the tip section of the sleeve, this will make the repair seem to disappear. Hope this helps.
