Jim,
When I get cases like this, I try to minimize the opportunity to notice any sort of a perceived winding issue.

So, when the rod is being held normally, I like to be sure that any issues like tag ends or similar will be on the side of the rod that is on the opposite side of the rod from when the person is using the rod in his/her hand.

The other thing that you can do, is to run the tag ends of the insert parallel to the other wraps, rather than at right angles. If you have the tag end under the next wrap for a turn or so, it will hold just fine, if held parallel to the wraps rather than at right angles. It is a bit tricky to wrap, but you can do it.

When I do this, I will put the tag end of the insert for about two wraps. Then, continue on with the other wraps. When finished, pull the loose end of the tag end, so that there is still a full wrap of the insert under the adjacent wrap, but no threads at right angles. If done well, the tag end will not show at all. Do a dozen practice wraps like this and then redo the wraps on your rod that you are building for the person of interest.

Another thing that you can do, and again - a bit tricky to wrap, but you can use the insert wrap itself to hold the tag end, rather than using the other colored wrap to hold the tag end of the insert.

Good luck
