11' 2-5oz surf rod wraps

I'm wrapping the guides on a surf rod. Just finished wrapping the first guide and I put a underwrap and then two over wraps all using D size thread. My question is do I really need two over wraps or is it just overkill? The rod will be used by my girlfriend who will be using it for lite bottom fishing and I'll be using it to throw 2-3oz plugs, spoons, and other types of lures for tarpon, roosters, redfish false albacore etc. I currently use a steelhead rod to fish for 10-20 lb redfish from shore . Pretty sure there is only one over wrap on it and I've landed some pretty nice fish on it. Any advice is always appreciated thanks.

It's most likely overkill.

I've read that a size thread is actually stronger due to the fact that there actually more wraps than the d size. Would I be better off using the a size for a single over wrap or sticking with the d?

Strength will not be an issue for what you want. Size D tread is easier to wrap and pack, size A gives a nice painted on look if packed tightly. A is also thinner so if not using CP with regular tread more of the background will come through after finishing. Since you started with D tread I would continue with it. There is nothing wrong with D tread, and will look good when finished.

I'd probably just stick with D and do a single overwrap.

For under wraps we would use sz "A", just 1 pass of over wrap sz "D"
If it is a spin rod or "turnover" wrapped revolving spool (casting type) rod,
the under wrap is also probably overkill.

Thanks everyone for the input. Going to leave the under wrap because my girlfriend likes it and the rod is mostly for her and going with one d size over.
