I have a fiberglass saltwater rod that I am stripping , painting and rewrapping. I have a can of KRYLON FUSION (for plastics etc). Has anyone tried it yet for painting a blank or should I just use regular paint? Any help or input is appreciated.
thank you, Tom Re: Blank Painting Question

The Fusion enamel seems to work well on rod blanks.

Hi Tom,
I am definitely no expert, but I have stripped and painted a number of rods in the past year. I tried the krylon fusion and it was ok but not really what I was looking for. It didn't seem to adhere that well for me even though I spent most of my time on the prep work. Anyway, I built a small rod paint box with ventilation. I actually started using an airbrush (autoaire paint for an airbrush - this is the paint some airbrush guys use on motorcycles and cars). Then I used a 2 part spray on urethane finish that is in an aerosol can (you push a button on the bottom of the can and the hardened mixes in -you then have 24 to 36 hrs to use it. I got some pretty awesome results but it is definitely time consuming. If I find a really good rod that's in need of rework - I will go through this process, but I don't think I would want to do it with a new rod blank. Jon Hood Re: Blank Painting Question

If you use Fusion and you are going to top coat with permagloss or lumisel give the paint a week to completely cure.

Before you invest in paint or spray painting equipment you might check with a local auto body shop to see how much they would charge for painting a blank or blanks. They have a wide range of colors, auto body paint is top quality stuff, and these shops provide fast work and beautiful results. Re: Blank Painting Question

Phil what is your experience in cost for a blank or two that gets painted by body shop?

I've had good results with the krylon fusion. I would use a body shop if it is a high end blank and the customer or you want a high end paint job(unless you know someone). I used a spray can of urethane on mine to finish. Permagloss is really strong stuff and makes a great finish on just about anything. Re: Blank Painting Question

I've had better luck with this stuff: [www.rustoleum.com] vs the fusion paints Re: Blank Painting Question
