Wooden thread spools-pro's or cons??

Hello,
I would like to spin a few working spools off of my bulk spools of thread. I do have a few empty plastic spools but they don't seem to hold enough thread. I have seen a 2 inch spool with an hour glass center that would hold plenty of thread. The real question is, are there any con's to this storage wise? Do they absorb moisture? If I stain or coat the spools what should I use and am I contaminating my thread in the long term? Ricardo Re: Wooden thread spools-pro's or cons??

Ricardo,
Why not just use the bulk spools? This is a picture of the thread stand that I use when using bulk spools of thread on my power wrapper: [www.rodbuilding.org] This design is identical to the typical thread stand used on industrial sewing machines when using large spools of thread. When wrapping I use this simple thread tension device. I place the bulk thread spool behind the stand and feed the tensioner from behind the stand rather than in front of it as pictured with the smaller spool of thread. [www.rodbuilding.org] --------- I just don't like to transfer thread from one spool to another since there is a chance for thread changes happening whenever thread is handled. Take care Re: Wooden thread spools-pro's or cons??

Another plus of transferring to smaller spools is you will find the splice points if there is any. How many times have www been surprised by these? Freddwhy (Rapt-Ryte) Re: Wooden thread spools-pro's or cons??

My main reason to use these wooden spools is I use a lot of black thread and I have the old Gudebrod 4oz. spools. So I like to break them down to smaller sizes. I want to get enough of the wooden spools so I don't have to stop and refill when I am on a wrapping groove and ruin my flow mojo! Re: Wooden thread spools-pro's or cons??

Ricardo,
I read and understand your post. But I have to ask again, is there a reason with your setup why you just don't use the thread directly from the 4 oz spools? If there an issue with your thread holder, do you wrap with a dozen different colors at the same time or what is the issue with using the larger spool? By the way, I also do wrap a lot of rods with black thread and that is the reason that I use the 4 oz spools of black thread for wrapping. But since I am only using the single main color I have no reason to transfer the thread to a smaller spool. I also do leave the thread in the same place and move the rod past the thread, so I have no reason or need to move the thread spool when wrapping. Be safe Re: Wooden thread spools-pro's or cons??

With my power wrapper I have to move the thread holder since I can't move the rod. John Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
